Sydney Harbour is Australia’s most iconic waterscapes and is one of the world’s most celebrated landscapes. For those visiting the city, the north side of the harbour offers the best views – not only will you get more full frontal views of the harbour you will also be able to see the city skyline in full.
Palm Beach is Sydney’s northernmost stretch of sand, a 50-minute drive from the Sydney city centre. Dramatic Barrenjoey Head is at the northern end of the beach, with historic Barrenjoey Lighthouse and keepers’ cottages at the end of an easy 2.3 km walk. This section of the beach is popular with experienced surfers looking for great waves.
At the southern end is a more protected environment for swimming; a 35-metre ocean pool is deep enough for laps but has a shallow end that’s ideal for kids. Other activities include fishing, golf, sailing or diving. Take the ferry from Palm Beach to pretty Ettalong.
Situated on the northern end of Dee Why Beach, Long Reef Beach is not well known amongst Sydney-siders and is mostly frequented by locals. It extends for almost 2km from the base of Long Reef Point to Dee Why Point and is backed by Dee Why Lagoon.
The New Year’s Eve fireworks are set off from a barge – right off Dee Why Beach – and can be seen up and down the northern beaches coast.
The display starts at 9pm and families are invited to come down for a meal in one of the Dee Why restaurants or to have a picnic in the reserve.
